I have always believed in the power of photos, because they are excellent for manipulation, but also for depicting realities that would otherwise be almost impossible to imagine. It all depends on who takes them, and so I have always felt that the photos shown by official sources only tell half the story. Nevertheless, it was still a shock for me when I saw unedited photos from death row for the first time. Even though I had been in the visiting room of the Polunsky Unit in Texas several times and had already noticed the depressing and dark atmosphere there, it is still something else when the walls are painted plain white, the bathroom has a door, and you can move the chair freely back and forth. Because that is not the environment and reality in which the inmates live, even if we are often told otherwise. Their reality still consists of mold, steel, stench, and a constant feeling of claustrophobia. Take a look:
